[Talk about it]
This is the first of a series of healing stories for children - written from a reiki perspective - about my cat Mr Chunky (RIP 18.9.03) Mr Chunky aims to support children by offering insights into possible ways of responding to everyday issues and concerns. LOOKING AT LIFE WITH MR. CHUNKY
Introducing Mr Chunky …
… the WHO Once, not long ago, there lived a very wise old cat called Mr Chunky. He chose this name for himself because he had short stout legs supporting a wobbly undercarriage - an undercarriage which he liked to fill up at every available opportunity. Fresh juicy prawns were always a particular favourite on his menu.
… the WHAT No-one knew where Mr Chunky had come from. He simply appeared one day quite a few years ago and the very kind people at the Cats’ Protection League watched over him until a lovely new home could be found for him. Mr Chunky’s new home turned out to be inside the very heart of a family where there were two children - a boy called William (Will for short) (aged 7) and his sister, Gabi (aged 5). This family wanted to reach out and give a good home to a cat that was lost or needed help and the minute they met Mr Chunky, they felt that he was just the right cat for them. What they didn’t realize at the time was that it was Mr Chunky who had chosen them - and for a very special purpose …
Gradually, as Mr Chunky settled down into his new home and also into the most comfortable armchair in the house, his presence began to have an extraordinary effect on everyone in the family. There had always been a lot of love in this home but when Mr Chunky arrived it was as if all the love which was directed at him entered his heart and was then beamed out again a thousand times stronger to all the people and creatures living nearby. It felt just like the beautiful golden rays of the sun, entering and warming the hearts of all living things, everywhere …
It was so relaxing and peaceful to be anywhere near Mr Chunky as he would always listen patiently to whatever anyone was saying and seemed to be able to understand a great many things. He also knew how to have lots of fun and play games. At the same time every afternoon, Mr Chunky used to stop whatever he was doing and go and sit under his special tree in the garden, so that he could see all the children coming out of the school which was at the end of the road. The children always used to look out for Mr Chunky and make such a fuss of him - especially when he did funny things to make them laugh. And they knew that Mr Chunky was always looking out for them, making sure that they were all OK. As time went by, it was Will who first began to realize that there was something else very special about Mr Chunky …
… the WHERE Will and Gabi had already discovered that whenever they thought about Mr Chunky, they could still feel that lovely warm feeling coming from Mr Chunky’s heart to their own - even when he wasn’t actually with them. It seemed to them that perhaps Mr Chunky could be in many different places at the same time … because Will could see a picture of Mr Chunky in his mind’s eye whenever he wished and Gabi could often even hear Mr Chunky’s miaow in her mind and this always made her smile and feel good inside.
Then, one day, Will arrived home from school and on seeing Mr Chunky sitting peacefully like a statue under his favourite tree in the garden, he decided to lie down on the grass beside him. Will was feeling really tired and upset and started to tell Mr Chunky about what had happened to him that day. Will had very nearly been run over outside the school gates because, just for a second, he had been deep in thought and had stepped out into the road without looking. The lady driving the car had jumped out and screamed her head off at him and he felt so horrible and scared that he didn’t know what to do. Other cars then started to honk at the lady so she got back into her car and luckily, drove off. Although Will was shaking, he hurried into school just as the bell was sounding. Soon, Will felt a bit better being with his friends but all day he kept thinking of how cross the lady had been with her big red face and wondered if she would still be cross with him next time she saw him. Will knew that the lady was the mum of someone in another class at his school.
And so the story went on until all the pent-up emotions of the day came tumbling out in a flood of tears all over the grass … and Mr Chunky simply sat, listened and gave his full attention to Will. That felt good.
After a while, Will sat up to move away from the wet patch of grass, and, stretching his arms out behind him, Will felt reassured by the feel of the mossy earth beneath his hands. It was almost as if the Earth was giving him strength and that the trees were helping by gently rustling their leaves in the breeze …
And then something very unexpected happened … Will got the distinct impression that Mr Chunky was trying to tell him something …
… so Will sat quietly, closed his eyes and took three deep breaths so that he could finally stop the last of the tears. Just as he did that, Mr Chunky blinked one eye and it occurred to Will that perhaps the reason the lady had screamed at him and been so angry was that she had had a huge fright herself - to think that Will had almost been run over and hurt or killed by her car! Yes, it made a lot of sense to think that perhaps the reason the lady had been so angry was because she was so WORRIED and SCARED herself! Will opened his eyes and somehow he knew that Mr Chunky had helped him to think up that idea. He felt much better.
A little later on, when Will was telling his Mum about everything, she agreed that Mr Chunky is indeed a very wise cat and that Will did just the right thing by listening to what his feelings were telling him and by talking with his Mum about what had happened.
The WHY …From that day on, whenever Will or Gabi thought about Mr Chunky sitting in his special place under the conifer tree, they found that they could think about things much more clearly and if ever they were feeling tired or sad or unhappy they could feel Mr Chunky’s love surrounding them like a lovely warm blanket. They knew in their hearts that he would always be with them wherever they went and that they could think of him whenever they wished. Over time, Will and Gabi learned many things with Mr Chunky’s help and there are many stories to tell.
The HOW …Mr Chunky is a bit like a mirror in the way that he can help us because, through him, we can see ourselves more clearly. Without saying a word or even a miaow, he reflects back to us all the lovely thoughts and treasures that we all carry inside us. He helps us to find more and more of them.
So, especially when we are feeling “iffy” (!), Mr Chunky helps us to find INSIGHTS into our FEELINGS - which then help us to get in touch with our INTUITION… and when we listen to our intuition and follow it, we are able to be our own true selves and we are in harmony with the flow of life itself. We are able to both receive and give out more and more love. We are in balance.
If there is a secret to using our intuition it is that something either feels good or it feels not-good. It is as simple as that. Let your feelings guide you and always do what feels good inside and do not do what feels not-good inside.
And Mr Chunky knows that whenever we think thoughts that include love from our hearts, our love goes out into the world to help all living things. We can send our love to anyone or anything we want and it will be received. Mr Chunky is sending love out to every child in the world every minute of every day and he knows that the more love he sends out, the more he has. This is how love works. Love is everlasting and it can never ever run out. This is why Mr Chunky always says “it’s the (loving) thought that counts”.
Will and Gabi’s Mum, “Old Ma P”, has been asked by Mr Chunky to share with you some of his stories and hopes you will enjoy them. So, until next time, remember that “it is love that makes the world go round!”
With love, light and blessings from Mr Chunky xxx * * * *
Introducing “Old Ma P” …
The Mr Chunky stories are brought to you through an energy perspective with the aim of providing insights into healing in the widest possible sense - but at the same time with particular references to the Reiki Healing System.
(The Japanese word “Reiki” means universal life force energy and is one of the names for the life force energy that everything in the universe (including us) is made up of. Other names include chi, ki, prana. It makes sense that the more we learn about this energy, the more we become aware of our environment and of ourselves and the more empowered we can become (if we so choose). In this way, the Reiki System can help us to increase our self-awareness and become “more whole” in our mind, body and spirit. And as we become more whole, we heal. The giving and receiving of healing treatments is simply a wonderful part of this overall process).
Whilst created primarily for younger children, I hope that by including references to Reiki and healing in general alongside each narrative, the Mr Chunky stories will be able to offer something of interest to people of all ages.
Each storyline reflects an issue corresponding to one of the energy centres which we all have. In this way, the scenario outlined above links in to the type of experience which relates to the base or root energy centre - i.e. it is to do with survival, the fight or flight response, danger, the colour red, anger & forgiveness and also with our feeling of being grounded in life (literally our connection with the Earth) and our appreciation of nature …
Also, one of the Reiki precepts is “Just for today, do not worry” - which is easier said than done, of course. However, it does lead to a growing appreciation that it is often worry that comes before anger and that consequently, if we choose to think thoughts that are free from worry, then we become angry less often. And it all sounds so easy! So, on that note and until next time …
