Dance has been an integral part of my life since I was a small child. I found such joy and freedom within it that I was hooked from the early age of three. Looking back, what I now see is that through dance, I found an inner calm, stillness, and an ability to connect with the universe as a whole.

My journey into Biodanza by Kathleen Nathanael

I first heard the word Biodanza when I was doing some Reflexology training. The tutor was talking over lunch about a type of dance class.. I’ve since learnt that the word Biodanza comes from two words “bios” which means life and “dance” which means movement full of meaning. I was also interested to hear her say it was about connecting with the joy of life through the rhythm of the music. It sounded great, just what I was looking for. So I took the details of the classes in London and put it away and forgot about it.

It took me two more hints to get to my first experience of Biodanza when I joined a friend at a one day Introductory Workshop in London.

It was an amazing day; the music was exciting and vibrant, the group and teacher were friendly and welcoming, and what a simple way to have fun. I felt like a child again, dancing for joy! I was hooked!

The following month I went to London to the Rolando Toro School of Biodanza in the UK, and again had a fantastic time. I very quickly decided I wanted to teach Biodanza and joined the School.

Over the past four years I have studied theoretical details and undergone extensive practical training to learn about Biodanza and how to become a teacher myself. Now I have started my own class, under the Supervision of Patricia Martello - Director of the School in London, and look forward to furthering my knowledge and experience and dancing around the world.

When I joined Biodanza I was single and enjoying my life. However, to my amazement I was very quickly asked out to dinner by a fellow student. We had a great time and that initial encounter lead to romance and sharing our life journey together. Indeed last year I was married to my wonderful partner Martin.

It has for me been an extraordinary journey, one I in no way expected when I joined my first Biodanza class. I’m not saying that the same will happen to you, everyone is different; however I do know that Biodanza helps you to connect with your inspiration, joy and desire in life. The best thing is to come along and try it for your self.

What is Biodanza?

Biodanza has been defined as “a system of human integration” and “A return to the wisdom of the senses”.

Each class is a series of simple exercises to help you connect with the music and movement in an integrated way - by yourself, with another and with the group. It is in essence experiential - a state of being, and so is difficult to define in purely linguistic terms.

Biodanza enables people to reconnect to life through experiencing their feelings, and through this they also reconnect to each other and everything in the universe. In society today it is normal to either express emotions, often through an outburst of rage, anger, fear or sadness or to repress the emotions and take them within resulting in physical and mental ill health.

Biodanza enables the individual to experience their emotions within a safe and supportive environment and allows the physical and emotional regeneration of the individual.

Detailed scientific research proves that regular participation in a class of Biodanza has beneficial effects on the biological, emotional and cellular chemistry of the body, returning it to a natural state of balance.
