Thought Field Therapy - a fascinating method of quickly overcoming fears, anxieties, habits, trauma and emotional distress by gentle tapping of the body.
When I first witnessed people overcoming anxieties and stress by simply tapping themselves with their fingers, I was amazed and sceptical in equal measure. However, as a complimentary health care practitioner, I am open-minded and curious, so I set out to investigate what I came to discover is Thought Field Therapy, or TFT.
The founder of TFT is Roger Callahan, PH.D and, along with Richard Trubo - a journalist - he has written a fabulous book called 'Tapping The Healer Within' which explains the principles behind the method and sets out various sequences of tapping (like a menu), to tackle specific issues.
According to the author, there are negative emotions associated with whatever anxiety, stress or fear a person is suffering from, and these represent 'active information'. He claims that this information is bound in what he terms as a 'Thought Field' which creates distress and disruption to the body's energy flow.
Tapping the body along specific energy meridians while concentrating on the anxiety or fear has the effect of unblocking the thought field and produces immediate and long-lasting relief.
That's a very brief summary of his 224 page book - and the point is that it actually works!
In my work as a hypnotherapist I have utilised TFT in cases where clients have suffered from long-standing emotional distress caused by various traumas. The results have been instantaneous. Without exception clients say that their distress levels have either reduced dramatically or have disappeared completely.
It appears to be the case that , when people are made to experience the feelings of anxiety, fear , guilt etc that are causing the distress and then tap the meridians in the correct sequence, the feelings either dissipate or leave them. Following the process , when asked to try and re-experience the old feelings , people find it difficult or impossible to do so.
Not only does it work instantaneously, but the results seems to be long-term or permanant, and the treatment can be 'topped up' easily with just a few moments quiet tapping. I even took one client successfully through the process over the telephone and was able to help her overcome a long-standing emotional trauma using TFT in association with hypnotherapy.
The book is well written and takes the reader through a series of steps to understand how TFT came about, the principles it is based upon and, most importantly, how to diagnose and tackle specific issues from a set of tapping 'menus'.
For anybody interested ( whether for self-help or as a therapist) I highly recommend the book. Its published by Contemporary Books ISBN number ISBN 0-8092-9880-5.
