Dancing with Stillness -

Dancing with Stillness - Kathleen Nathanael

"To be alive is to dance and to dance is to be alive".

Dance has been an integral part of my life since I was a small child. I found such joy and freedom within it that I was hooked from the early age of three. Looking back, what I now see is that through dance, I found an inner calm, stillness, and an ability to connect with the universe as a whole.

Later when I began ballet classes the expression was more precise and sculptured but there was always that inner calm, a place where the dancer and the music became one as they joined in an intricate interplay of movement and expression.

These days, I practice a much more expressive form of movement and self expression which has led to a greater freedom in my movement, in my thinking and which I believe has profoundly improved my life.

The actual dance method is not important here; what I want to convey is the expansion of awareness which it brings.

Some of the premises on which the method is based are that "all life is sacred", that "all life is equally valuable", that "we have boundless potential" and that "we are all intimately connected to and with the rest of the universe".

Within a dance session we work with the "vivencia" which roughly translated means "the moment fully lived" or, in other words, we are fully present and live in the moment. We do not dance particular steps or follow the music - instead we let the music move us. Nor are we worrying about what to cook for tea or if our hair or clothes look good, we are allowing ourselves time and space to be free from everyday worries and concerns. So it helps us to let go of our social conditioning and learned behaviour; we can then be more open to life and the possibilities around us.

This is a major attraction of the method and, for me, it is the spiritual element within the technique. The possibility of connecting with the greater divine essence which dwells within all living things. The transcendence of the limits of the body and the merging with the elements and of the cosmos beyond.

I must point out that this is a progressive technique and within a beginners class we would work with great care and in "feedback" (a term describing how we work with individuals within their own capabilities and to their own limitations). Gently introducing the participants to vivencias which facilitate a deep connection both with themselves and with the universe.

Specialist workshops are used which focus on particular qualities of the technique. For example, working with clay, dancing in nature, workshops in water, working with the four elements. These help to focus on particular aspects of the technique and allow for a deeper experience for all involved.

My husband Martin and I have developed a workshop in which we explore "Stillness into Action". It is a one day workshop in which we combine his lifetime work in spirituality and meditation with my lifetime experience of dance and movement. The day will combine teaching and practice and we look forward to sharing it with you so that we all move effortlessly toward the divine, both within and all around us.
