WHCPG THERAPIST'S SPOTLIGHT SUE PREADY
Insights into healing …
As therapists we all have our own individual mix of talents, skills and abilities and I am always interested to hear of other people's approaches and experience - which is just one of the many reasons why being a founder member of the WHCPG has been such a great joy for me. In response to the invitation to write something for the therapists' spotlight, I'd like to bring you a flavour of the essence of my work as a healer - by means of three insights: 1) the underlying ethos, 2) some student feedback 3) signposting to further details and information.
As background, I began training in reiki in 1998 and qualified as a reiki teacher in 2003, followed by full healer membership of the National Federation of Spiritual Healers in 2005 (see www.nfsh.org.uk) I have since been studying sound healing with the voice with The College of Sound Healing and hope to qualify this summer (www.collegeofsoundhealing.co.uk) .
Although all of these healing modalities focus on bringing relaxation and stress relief to patients being treated, my specialism has become one of providing support and insights through times of change in people's lives, including major life transitions. I help people to see themselves and their situations with fresh eyes. Along the same lines, I have also written a number of healing stories for children about my cat, Mr Chunky (see www.amazon.co.uk) and welcome invitations to visit children in school.
1 Underlying Ethos
First and foremost, I'd like to emphasise that all healing is essentially self-healing: "healer heal thyself" as the old adage goes! I did not realize this when I started to learn reiki - principally 'in order to be able to help others'. However, "reiki always flows to where it is needed" … and in my case, reiki has brought me the gift of beginning to discover my true self: self-realization through self-healing, in other words. This of course is a never-ending story of twists and turns and paradox and goodness knows what! But what a blessed relief it is to now allow myself to just be me, whatever.
To elaborate further, up until about 12 years ago I used to think of myself as being a 'normal person' and I still do. However, I am aware that a profound change has taken place within me during this time - to the extent that it feels like I am now living in a different world almost. It has been said that Reiki is the secret invitation to happiness and that has certainly proved to be the case for me. Indeed, Reiki has served as a blueprint of understanding in my life and a bridge to a new way of being. Together with spiritual healing, it has also sustained and supported me through many personal challenges.
So, how does this work, then - you may well ask? In a nutshell, although learning reiki is commonly associated with the ability to give healing treatments, by far its most important function is as a tool for self development through awareness. And the way this works is wonderfully simple: reiki is a Japanese word meaning universal life force energy - hence, by learning a little about how the energy of the universe works, reiki enables us to become more aware of how our own individual supply of this energy works. This in turn puts us in a position to consciously choose how we wish to use the energy available to us. In this way our self-awareness increases along with our ability to respond positively to change - if we so choose. As life is ever-changing this is a most precious skill to further develop. It is this experience and the insights gained which lie at the heart of all aspects of my healing practice.
2 Some student feedback Dear Sue: I'd like to share some feedback with you on this encouraging phrase you sent me during my worst recent moment: you mentioned that "deep within your current challenges you will find many tiny sparkling seeds of love and light almost too beautiful to imagine - and all waiting for the chance to emerge like fireflies on the dawn - to light the way for you and your family."
These were the 'sparkling seeds of love and light' I found: In grief - I found deeper love to give. In hopelessness - I found greater faith in Universal Source Creator. In darkness - I found complete trust that my way would be illuminated and guided. In poverty - I found enjoyment of simplicity (e.g. country walks) and trust in providence.
I found resources of strength, focus and much insight, through listening to my inner wisdom in my Reiki practice. The Reiki practice proved a life saver and totally invaluable. So thank you for the love and light and inklings that surround you.
