Hypnosis is a state of mind somewhere between sleep and wakefulness. It can be produced either by oneself (auto or self-hypnosis) or by responding to the directions of a therapist. The actual experience of being hypnotized varies from person to person; it is usually accompanied by deep physical relaxation while awareness of your surroundings is reduced.
Hypnosis is a natural phenomenon that occurs in everyday life, for example when day-dreaming or being absorbed in a book. When you are in hypnosis, your conscious mind takes the back seat so that your unconscious mind is able to activate inner resources and take on beneficial suggestions.
